Well, I suck at today’s #marchmeetthemaker prompt, the dreaded flat-lay! I am so jealous when I see a cool one. I will keep trying. In the mean time, here are a few pictures of the pieces I have out today.

Day 18 and 19

Painting is not just jumping in and painting, and voila!, it is a masterpiece. Any artist will tell you, there is a lot of prep involved in each project before it is made.

I start by finding a subject. I have a collection of specimens, and if I don’t have an actual specimen, I will spend days scouring the internet and looking through my book collection. I also take a lot of photographs for source material. I need to have a good feel for the subject, and I need to be able to visualize what the subject will look like in the painting. This takes research.

I like to say that I am a little like Larry David. I don’t like to write the script down before I start. An important aspect of my process is improvisation. I have to be able to visualize the subject of my painting before I start. But once I start, I respond to the piece with intuition to create the external composition.

Then the fun starts. Painting and adornment with 23k gold leaf. I will do some process videos in the near future and go into more detail about that soon!

Am I better? Am I worse? I don’t know. I have always been bad.

My brain just thinks visually. Impulsively. I have always made art with my intuition. Writing is not like that. It’s planned, it’s ordered. There are rules. Bear with me while I figure mine out.

I am kind of having fun though, figuring out my words. So thank you for sticking with me.

Statement for the Nest:

First, there was the Deer. A painting that was inspired by an incident that involved a deer that was shot on my property, and the subsequent months that followed, watching the animal return to the earth. When only fur was left, I collected some, but left most of it. The day after I collected the fur, a giant oak tree fell on where the body once rested. Months later, in early spring, the pandemic had started and I spent more than a month inside. Scared. Finally, I forced myself to go outside and explore the woods. And that is when I found it. A bird had made a nest out of deer fur! The Deer’s fur. This piece was inspired by the feelings I had at that moment of discovery.

Using a variety of techniques, I create artworks that explore themes of natural history, historical occurrence, memory, and cycles. My materials are found and handmade—my most precious material is my grandmother’s antique jewelry that I crush and use to make handmade watercolors. This piece also includes rubies, emeralds, 24k gold, deer fur, geodes, and glass.

The Nest / Original

She was exhibited for several months, and now she is home with me! When I exhibit in a gallery I have to share between 40%-60% with the gallery. Now that she is home with me, I was able to drop the price a bit! I spent 3 intense months on her and she is made with a LOT of 24k gold, gems, and other mixed-media. I have shipped prints of her all over the world, but there is nothing like the original. She sparkles, shines, and glows. She is an experience. Full price includes a frame of your choice, but on sale she comes without a frame.

South Haven Art Fair 2017 / Emerging Artist Winner

I had a wonderful experience at the South Haven Art Fair on July 1st and 2nd! A lot of paintings went to new homes, and I met so many wonderful people and artists. I also won the Emerging Artist award, which was a huge surprise. I definitely plan on going back next year.

Studio Snap Shots

A few months ago I painted and re-organized part of my studio space. This is my "Clean Space", where I do my painting. My work space is actually located in five parts of my home. I also have an office, where I do all of my digital work and business. A dark room / print room, where I do all my photography and printmaking work. I have a room dedicated as a warehouse, where I store all my finished work. And a wood shop a.k.a. garage, where we do the framing. One day I will build a dedicated structure that will house all aspects of the business, and it is my dream to offer an apprenticeship program for artists.

A skull and a beetle

Here are a few of my new pieces that are waiting to get framed. We cut the maple, now we just have to assemble, varnish, and purchase the glass. It's a long process from start to finish, but at least it is rewarding.

I have been experimenting with alternative materials, and different subject matter. I am breaking from my theme, hoping it will come full circle in the end. I have a lot of ideas but I am still in the phase were I am figuring out how to execute them. It's intimating and exciting. I hope to take some in-progress shots soon. I am also working on a video.

A few photos from my newest series

I am really happy with how these turned out. The gilding (silver, gold, and copper leaf) is incredibly hard to capture in a photograph, and these photos do not do any of the pieces justice--but at least you can get an idea. The paintings are rather intricate, and fun to look at up close. The gilding pops from far away, and during different times of day. I love that an artwork can change with time. That seems to be a big part of what I am interested in.
